What is this falling away Paul speaks about as translated in the KJV. Jesus spoke about the apostasy also.
Two sides of the same coin are revealed in scripture. Jude, Jesus’ half brother, spoke on one side of the coin.
Jude 1: 3:
“Dear friends, although I was eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.”
These ungodly immoral people are found out, every time, and it is evident to all they are false. This variety, though causing both unbelievers and those who believe trouble injuring the faith of many, are far less dangerous in the end than the more subtle varieties of deceiving devils.
The next variety is the legalistic variety allegedly striving by their own will to obfuscate any appearance of sin, through much talk of the law and obedience to the point no one can hear or speak of anything else. I call them Mini Moses. This type is just as apostate as the immoral ones.
Paul writing to Timothy a young convert who was exhibiting gift-ed-ness in regard to being a minister the following at I Timothy 1: 5-7:
“The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.6 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk.7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.”
Paul asks and informs, in Galatians 3: 1-10:
“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law,or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? 4 Have you experienced so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
“PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT” (That is salvation, having the Spirit of truth)
Paul was authorized to the believers and apostles by Jesus speaking Ananias as Christ’s chosen to reveal the gospel to Gentiles. A lot of the confusion in the church in our day comes from refusal to OBEY JESUS’ DESIRE in this as we find in Acts 9: 15:
“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands onSaul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.”
The church in our day is utterly divided. Baptism, gifts of the spirit, legalistic line drawing, I am under grace and can do as I please, I had a dream, and on and on. Arguments Arguments Arguments. All apostasy!
Paul says this at Galatians 5: 4, 5:
“You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.”
The falling away from grace and the failure to admit to current unrighteousness are the most serious. Paul says “ALIENATED FROM CHRIST IS FALLEN AWAY FROM GRACE!
For years before I understood and listening in horror now: Hebrews 6: 4-6.
“It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.”
The law required blood sacrifice. Fall back into the law requires this re-sacrifice. Falling into sins of the flesh is bad. But John assures us in this that sinning is not instant ashes for you. I John 1: 5-10:
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”
WHAT THEN IS NON APOSTASY:
Ephesians 2: 8-10:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
2 Thessalonians 2: 3, 4:
“Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”
Mark 3: 34, 35: “Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
Ephesians 2: 14-18:
“For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”
You know who you are. Discernment is required as Jesus warned Beware children of what you hear and see. For many will come in my name … .”
John 16: 12-14:
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.”
Paul is in agreement with Jesus when he says in Galatians:
“He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
Jesus in John 3: “You must be born again.”
John 3: 5-8:
“Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
TRUE STORY here for your discernment. Age 43, three years after earning a degree in mechanical engineering. After being falsely accused of crime for putting $ 10.00 gas in the tank of my car from an authorized pump and going in to ask they put it on my wife’s account since she worked at that store, I was arrested for theft. First criminal charge of my life. Theft cannot occur from an authorized gas pump. PERIOD! Must be UNAUTHORIZED CONTROL over the property of another. PERIOD!
A year and a half later, I was in federal custody under a very serious indictment. By age 43 we had clear indication I was not a criminal nor even bent in that direction. A professional now with misdemeanor criminal record. Had committed no crime to found such a result to begin with.
Sentenced in Kansas prior for probation violation on a second false charge of domestic charge, the Lord was working to get me in front of the federal indictment, where he wanted me. Reconnecting from their jail with old friends in the Church of the Nazarene, the Lord told me on April 23, 2002, “Do not worry my child, I WILL DELIVER YOU.” I told those friends in the Church of the Nazarene and others outside and all the prisoners and leaders in CCA Leavenworth Detention Center, “The Lord says he will deliver me.”
Turns out after teaching police how to play cops and robbers, since they had to have it that way, there is a law of the United States under the compact clause of the United States Constitution called Interstate Agreement on Detainers 18 USC Appendix § 2, Article IV (e) and it says:
“If trial is not had on any indictment, information, or complaint contemplated hereby prior to the prisoner’s being returned to the original place of imprisonment pursuant to article V(e) hereof, such indictment, information, or complaint shall not be of any further force or effect, and the court shall enter an order dismissing the same with prejudice.” (Emphasis added.)
No further force of indictment. Indictment required at the 5th Amendment, it says:
“No person shall be held to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime except on indictment by a grand jury … .”
The plurality of the US Supreme Court in Alabama v Bozeman, 533 U.S. 146 (2001):
Held: The literal language of Article IV(e) bars any further criminal proceedings when a defendant is returned to the original place of imprisonment before trial. Pp. 152-157.
I have never told this true story without admitting, once the police and courts produced the first injustice, I very intentionally taught them to play cops and robbers. Now, after further injustice produced by the seminarilly confused I am teaching them to play this is what the Bible actually says.
The Lord wanted me to understand this about the law. Jesus bought whoever calls on his name in faith (the new birth) believing he is Lord and that God raised him from the dead will be saved. Romans 10: 9, 10:
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all band richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
This is where we will start next time.
