Jesus talked about wine in Mark: 2: 22:
“And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”
And again in Matthew 9: 17:
“Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
And again in Luke 5: 37:
“And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.”
Jesus is talking about the old covenant and the new covenant. They cannot be mixed. If they are mixed both the wine and the skins will be ruined. The old covenant is entailed and completely explained in Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy and Numbers by Moses the law giver.
John’s gospel is unique among them as written to Christians, by an eyewitness (Luke was not an eye witness, he explains he investigated these things), Mark and Matthew were written to Jews, to get them to believe. John, eye witness to Jesus’ life and ministry, wrote to believers in Jesus. In A.D. 70 (70 BCE) God made his intentions for the covenant of Moses, made exclusively with Israel, painfully clear. The law of Moses was a “required doing” of 613 (or so) unseverable commandments. You do them all perfectly or you have done none of them. James explained this to Jews, living in Jerusalem, still therefore under the political rule of the law, also.
No one ever did all of them! So no one ever did any of them. Jesus alone, as the Son of God, born of the woman, Mary, fathered by the Holy Spirit alone fulfilled it.
“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Christians have been seminaried into intellectual anathema. The many have been taught Salvation in Jesus, then a religious self improvement through commandments of the Law. Utter hypocrisy! None of the leaders in the “business” (tippy toeing around 501(c)(3)’s Johnson Amendment … Matthew 6: 24) called the church in our day “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind” 24/7, 365, cradle to grave and the law, as self improvement tool is an utter joke (Romans 7: 4-6) as stated in the scriptures themselves.
As John writes in John 1:
” … Law; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (NIV)
The DISOBEDIENCE to Jesus, in unbelief is the reason the church is on the whole ruined because professor know it all, refuses to separate the new wine into the new wine skins. How is the old wine better? If I were able to obey my way to Jesus, then I am in control.
Paul was expert among the experts in the Mosaic Law. Nicodemus also.
Jesus said to Nicodemus, in John (written to believers/eye witness):
“You must be born again.” (NIV)
Jesus told them (seminarilly confused) where to look, as Gentiles, for the proclamation of his name, Acts 9: 15:
“But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” (NIV)
The further disobedience, Matthew 15: 24:
‘He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”’ (NIV) (Rhetorical, are you a lost sheep of Israel? Gentile?)
And the further refusals to obey the Lord:
“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed 9 and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written:
“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;
I will sing the praises of your name.”
10 Again, it says,
“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”
11 And again,
“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;
let all the peoples extol him.”
12 And again, Isaiah says,
“The Root of Jesse will spring up,
one who will arise to rule over the nations;
in him the Gentiles will hope.”
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (NIV)
John’s gospel, alone, among the others, explicitly reveals the reality behind this statement of Paul, from Jesus himself beginning in John 16: 7-10, Jesus says:
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.” (NIV)
Breaking it down: Jesus said, “Prove the world wrong about sin. One sin left: Not believing in Jesus.
Righteousness, “I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer.”
Judgment, the prince of this world (the devil) stands condemned.
He (Satan) knows his time is short and having nothing left to abuse God with he seeks to condemn others and has often placed his minions up front at the microphone. Where would you work? All those down at the brothel are already lost and he does not need to work there to help them to Hell.
Further Jesus completely lays bare the born again relationship in John 16: 12-14:
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (NIV)
Commandments of the law? Paul alone in the entire Bible speaks correctly, as Jesus told you, but you have listened to the disobedient in Acts 9: 15.
The church (in most cases) in our day is a business and those seminaries are businesses attached to create a religion rather than obeying the Spirit of Christ. John 15: 1-7:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”
There is, rather than, any increase of fruit, a falling away seen most among the young raised in churches. Falling away, Paul?
Galatians 5: 4:
“You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.” (NIV)
Ephesians 2: 8-10:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (NIV) I’m Josey Wales.
