Music In The Day
Back in the olden days we formed a band, played cover songs in bars and clubs. Dreamed of the day we would record a demo, send it away to Capitol, MCA, Chess, Motown or whatever label. That’s how it was done.
Then hoping to get the letter telling us, we had been chosen, and the contract would be in the mail. Not sure anyone really wanted to sign those contracts, but they did. Lynerd Skynerd recorded the threat, “Working For MCA” and I have always suspected Pink Floyd, “Money” and “Have a Cigar”, was of the same sentiment.
By age 22 no recording contracts had been forth coming. It was that summer, on June 14, 1979, that I came to complete understanding by the Spirit of Truth coming (in unmistakable power) to dwell within me, that Jesus is the Lord, as the Son of God, crucified dead, buried for three days in the tomb of Joseph of Arimethea, laid by Joseph and Nicodemus and then raised from the dead.
Nicodemus believed because he saw Jesus’ prophesy fulfilled. Jesus was lifted up as he foretold. Just as Jesus said, to Nicodemus:
You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
That is what happened to me on June 14, 1979.
Then, of course the religious, set out trying to make me religious, this, as opposed to walking in the Spirit. Faith in Jesus is righteousness, as we are told at Romans 10: 4. Romans 10: 9, 10 says this in simple truth. Ephesians 2: 8-10 states it completely. The ongoing life proceeds as Jesus tells us in John 16: 7-14.
The gospel is very simple. Just listen to whom Jesus tells you to listen: Acts 9: 15.
Sing A New Song
So, I sold my Rock-N-Roll Rig and bought a D50NT Guild Guitar. Songs were already coming out of me. Many rough spots later, I went to my friend, Paul Clark, and said, “OK, I’m ready to record my songs.” Circa 1996.
Record them we did, with his half a million dollar guitar collection. From the 1920s to the 1950s and a great Collings sloted head stock, dreadnought, and my Larivee’ L-19. The studio in his basement was great with excellent tube mic and preamp and a compressor “to kill for”, if you’re into compression. I am. Paul is a vintage guitar dealer as well as a recording Artist.
Paul operated the controls and did the punchins, like the one we had to do at the end of one of the songs while trying to be silent for the tape runoff. My stomach groweled and I nearly fell off the stool, laughing. We both laughed for five minutes before we could continue. Take two.
A week or so after we recorded the acoustic guitars and I sang the lead vocals, Paul had his guys in to record some of his songs. Don Harris is a classically trained musician and the best bass player I have heard. Don and I went to the same church for a year or so. I knew Don from being friends with Paul.
I handed Paul $ 200.00, knowing Don was in town, and asked Paul to ask Don if he would play bass on a couple of my songs. That was Friday. Monday morning I arrived at Paul’s. He told me Don played on everyone of my songs. I was dumbfounded.
Paul had left Don in the studio while he chased down and ADAT cable somewhere north of the river. Don told me a couple months later, “I was sitting with nothing to do, and put your tape in and started to play.” He said, “Your playing was so solid and I kept enjoying myself kept on going.” What a compliment.
Jay Pfeifer played keyboards in that freewheeling Christian band. He played on all of the songs except “The Wedding Song.” On my CD Jay gives that Ray guy from the Doors “a run for his money, as they say.” On the tile track, Look Up Now, the former Waterdeep player blows the cobwebs out of the syrup I’m acustomed to hearing from so many Christian Artists.
Buy that track for $ .99 BUY SONG DOWNLOADS HERE and you won’t be sorry. Fantastic bass and organ I can hardly believe, from Jay and Don, made it onto my CD. Blessed.
The Rest of the Story
Rod Lincoln played drums in band the world knows as Shooting Star. Rod has played drums in many worship groups in churches, as well as on several of Paul’s projects. Not sure about the rest of Rod’s contributions. He’s a crisp rock-n-roll drummer. That’s how I like them.
In the intervening years a clic track on the ADAT came up missing. Rod had to play with no clic for reference. I’m sure it was not that much fun to play songs he did not know and had not rehearsed. I think he did a great job.
Additionally, Rod and Paul mixed the final and mastered it all in Rod’s studio.
Debt of Gratitude
I thank the Lord, Jesus for the salvation, eternal life, and the songs. I thank Paul, Don, Jay and Rod for extending the grace of the Lord in helping me with their lavish gifts. Eighteen years in the making, many struggles throu,gh perseverance we gain maturity in our walk with Jesus, his Spirit sanctifying us moment by moment as we listen to what Jesus tells the Spirit to speak to our hearts along the way. John 16: 7-14.
Please give the songs a listen, and be strengthened. Receive the Holy Spirit and be transformed. May the precious grace pierce your heart and give you the new life in Jesus. It is the Father’s gift to you in his Son, the Risen one, who was and is and is to come. Listen Here on Amazon.
Revelation 19: 1-9:
After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
2 for true and just are his judgments.
He has condemned the great prostitute
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”
3 And again they shouted:
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”
4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:
5 Then a voice came from the throne, saying:
“Praise our God,
all you his servants,
you who fear him,
both great and small!”
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
You are invited. Please come. Chris 04/19/2020.
